Giving new life to a classic tune by Erik Vilde

Update: The tracks below are planned to be released on October 25.

I’ve been working on a remix for the track ”Negerboll”, originally published by Erik Vilde on YouTube in 2007, since April. Erik wrote ”Negerboll” and uploaded it the very same evening, and as of today (October 2024), it has almost 500k views. It has been involved in controversies with—surprise, surprise—racists! Who would’ve thought?

Erik Vilde can be described as a songwriter who primarily plays acoustic guitar. His music often combines humorous lyrics with an acoustic sound, creating a lighthearted yet insightful feel. His ability to put an entertaining twist on everyday topics adds a unique charm to his style, making it both engaging and fun.

The ”Negerboll” remix?

The first two attempts failed, largely because I wasn’t fully familiar with the software, the genre, or the rhythm. This has haunted me for months, as I felt I couldn’t let such a brilliant set of lyrics down. So this weekend, I’ve sat down, taken a deep breath, and given it a new chance.

In the original track, Vilde has aimed his humor at the ongoing debate, simply because he got tired of people constantly arguing over trivial matters, such as whether it’s called negerboll or chokladboll (oatmeal ball). This is a constant struggle we live with—one against pettiness in Sweden, something Vilde emphasizes in the track as well. For instance, he sings that ”it’s always been called that,” which, of course, isn’t true (unless you’re an idiot). In the song, he also tells the story of Ann-Sofie, a likely fictional character who suffers from these exact issues. By the end, she loses her composure to such an extent that she completely mixes up her words. Vilde uses Ann-Sofie’s meltdown to highlight the absurdity of the debate, which ultimately devolves into racial slurs, only showing that we haven’t progressed as far as we should in terms of societal development.

In very short terms: it had to be remixed and given new life so we can be reminded of this for a while longer. It will, if everything goes as planned, reach spotify and several streaming services around october 25. Otherwise, I’ll have this info updated.
